Day Skippers day one

How is it team?

So you all should have the book Safety in Small Craft, I saw several of you with copies of this last week. I'm wondering now how many of you have opened this book and have read through parts from it? I'm really interested in the boat handling section as well as the section on all the equipment needed. Reading this book is one thing, but understanding the purpose and knowing the why we have all of this stuff is an important part of being a boatbuilder.

Vaughn is leading you off today.

Can you work with him and cover the following:

• Buoys and beacons
• Equipment and its use 
• Rules of the road at sea
• Boat handling

Vaughn should be able to tell you all a few good stories of his past experiences on these topics.

Could you all compose a list of equipment necessary for a day trip in the dory we will be building next. I would then like you all to sketch how you could best stow this equipment aboard the vessel. 

Remembering that all the equipment must be fit for purpose. 

We will be setting off to sea to go fishing for the day in the upper harbour so we will need to know many of the Buoys and Beacons, also we probably will be encountering other vessels while at sea and it is our responsibility to know the Rules of the road at sea.

I will be looking forward to you all explaining to me in depth and detail some of the new things that you have learnt.

Sometimes I get really frustrated

I first started to blog using Blogger a few months ago.... now I've changed and have moved over to VOX...

I asked once... So can I move, copy or some thing (new language stuff) my old posts, which I think still have a great value, so I can see them in VOX?

Not a problem was the reply... So I went down that path... but made the fatal error in not getting to the end while, or in front of the support I had then, so what has happened now is ... I'ved tried several times to achieve this "need to " but  "I'm stuffing up something" ..."quote from Ray".... that's technology for you... that smart that even I can't do it... looked around for help.... but can only see techno turkeys like me available.... 

Hey dude don't be so hard on yourself... OK let's think about this again...yeh right and waste another hour try to do it!!!!!

I think I might go and have some lunch... now that's a great idea... see you

 

Designing a personal teaching framework

How is it?

I'm sitting staring at my computer screen, contemplating where to start. This is quite mind provoking, as I normally pride myself on being able to design. I've been surfing the net over the last few years and have recently been looking again at learning theories. Carl Rogers, one of my hero's comes to mind quite frequently. I enjoyed one of his books called Freedom to Learn.

My mind is racing over several topics at the moment. My typing skills kill this train of thought. If only I could record the journey it has taken in the last few minutes. 

In Blogger you can save a draught and revisit to edit when time becomes available, so in VOX I think I can achieve the same result by going down to Share this post: and in Viewable by: picking on the you (hidden) not selecting With my groups and then saving. This saves and posts the blog in VOX. To get back into edit I opened the blog(I found the blog in the YOU, which is located to the right of Create) and under options (to the right) picked on the edit option. 

If I could link to a paper right now, this is to refresh my memory on detail contained within it, then that would be a great step forward for me right now. So here goes let me see if I ...

I'm frustrated.... need some application that is capable of graphically showing my design process, concepts, yet will allow links and be flexable to change. Capabilities to zoom and pan would also be nice. Have had a try using ahead but... I can't get this to link. We have a look on the net... invest in time.

How is it?

The more I learn the less I know.... but I'm learning that!

These affordances stimulate the development of a participatory culture in which there is genuine
engagement and communication, and in which members feel socially connected with one another. Having
said this, one cannot assume that just because social software provides affordances, that is all that is
required for effective learning. Careful planning and a thorough understanding of the dynamics of these
affordances are mandatory. Moreover, the deployment of ICT tools for learning must be underpinned by
an explicit learning paradigm and informed by pedagogies that support learner self-direction and
knowledge creation.

So I'm reading this artical on Web 2.0 stuff

So what is an affordance then ?

I was asked a fair while ago now to create a plan, for each course, of what teaching and learning might look like in the programme it teach on. At that time I could not clearly see the purpose of this plan, even though a template was supplied, with a week or two of time to fill this out. Warning bells should have been rung here. There was no link. For a link to happen you need to have at least two things. 

One of which is a learning theory and the other is an affordance. 

Now to make sense of these two things by firstly getting a handle on how they might work for the student. 

In my (our) mind map  I have PLE and have inserted a note: 

The PLE is an example of such a learning environment, in which learners manage their own learning by selecting, integrating and using various software tools and services. It provides contextually appropriate toolsets by enabling individuals to adjust and choose options based on their needs and circumstances, resulting in (ideally) a model where learner needs, rather than technology, drive the learning process.

So this for me is the use of this mind map that helps me make sense of our learning environment by giving it a visual appearence.

One neat thing in Blogger is the icon for removing formating. Can this be done in Vox?

Design of a personal teaching framework

How is it? 

The fog is still at sea level. But I'm hearing others sounding off, so there is hope out there. Some are still at a distance but I can feel that others are close by.

I think at last I'm starting to get my mind around what links might look like. The links I'm starting to see are those that are between emerging learning technologies (Web 2.0 and stuff) and social learning theories.

Have been doing a fair bit, to say the least, of surfing the net, talking to colleges, and doind alot of self reflecting, in an attempt to paint a picture in my mind that starts to make sense. This picture, an artwork on the canvas, is to have the back ground (personal teaching framework)  , which at the moment I intend to title 'Education". 

Remember I am still at sea, in fog. For you that have experienced this, you will know what I mean when I say that my awareness his heightened and all my senses are on alert. I have plotted a course and this is being logged.

I have started to make sense of these links by using some of the technology available on the Web (Web 2.0). For a long time now I have been very keen on mind mapping. Several applications are excellent but  I have chosen one named "Mindmiester".  As I'm try to think of the reasons why I chose this, collaboration springs to mind. This is a link. I am aware that when I establish a link, I also should make sense of this. I am creating this blog as I read articals on various topics, one of my tutors reminded me, by a blog, that I need to reference these articals, so I went off to the library last week and picked up a CD. This is so that I can download "Endnote" onto my computer. aparently Endnote makes life easy... not so, I say at the moment, as when I explained, to a techO  that I had a CD to install, but was not too sure on how to do this, they offered to help watch over my shoulder as I had a go... all good stuff but... the CD was an old version... so back to the library... my body language must of explained all because on being issued with the latest version I over heard the librarian saying that she would remove the old one from the system... not much time wasted, but a good example of mice and men... This is a link. How is it?

Have been thinking of a way to pull together (make sense) of my personal teaching framework and my (our) concept map.

I often ask my students during the course of a day, "Easy or Hard"? 

Hard but becoming easier I can say now... I suppose that this is learning...

So I've made a video that attempts to pull together the framework and the map.

Imagine if...

Instead of a book on how to build a dory, the team creates a range of videos that explain the process during the build. The how to do its and the why you are doing it that way. Also there could be a section on tips and tricks and basic rules.

These could be part of or incorporated into your blogs. 

Can we talk more about this next week?

Concept map that lead to another

So what learning might happen if? A good opening question, so what's in a concept? An idea that may or may not work or be of value, yet is because you have made the concept overt. Well that's my interpretation, so I highlighted the word concept and looked it up in the dictionary, which states:

Thought I'd try to work out a concept map of education, this is in no way finished, and upon starting this mindmap, I decided to allow others to collaborate in/on it. See link to concept map.

 So there in that one location...Our mental pictures are at time messy, as an outsider once described this mindmap, well that's how it is while you are making sense of a concept. We linked using mindmeister several web 2.0 tools and in doing this attempted to underpin various appropriate pedagogical practices. At times I found Mindmeister quite restrictive in the sense that linking and creating new paths is very restricted with this software. 

I would like to thank the others who particapated in building this concept map.

Later I used Prezi to construct and help make sense of concepts visually. I have only now discovered that Prezi has a new function that allows collaboration to occur. Will be trying this out in the future, but not now as the eleventh hour looms closer.

 I'll mention this to my students and perhaps ask them to have a go next week using prezi meeting. I'll be interested in what comes out of it.
