I'm wondering what the new might look like for Small Craft Build?

Good things are about to happen this year.

 

 

Small Craft Build SCL 1

How is it?

The journey has begun.... The class (group photo needed here) has organised themselves  into three teams. 3 x 5 = 15. Vickel is in a team!

I have gone over the course aim... Greg read out load and I set the sceen for them and recorded this on the Smartboard. Greg also read out the two learning outcomes.

I then asked them what was their understanding of SCL and we recorded this and disscussed.

They then got into their three groups for an 1/2 hour get together and then reported back.

The report back went really well, with the three speakers descibing what each group thought was high on their prioty list. I'm sure that they will all blog on this first meeting.

The three also spoke with confidence, was this because the group has already appointed the best speaker?

One group and I went to see Peter and got some prices for materials. A good early move by that group.

Day Skippers day one

How is it team?

So you all should have the book Safety in Small Craft, I saw several of you with copies of this last week. I'm wondering now how many of you have opened this book and have read through parts from it? I'm really interested in the boat handling section as well as the section on all the equipment needed. Reading this book is one thing, but understanding the purpose and knowing the why we have all of this stuff is an important part of being a boatbuilder.

Vaughn is leading you off today.

Can you work with him and cover the following:

• Buoys and beacons
• Equipment and its use 
• Rules of the road at sea
• Boat handling

Vaughn should be able to tell you all a few good stories of his past experiences on these topics.

Could you all compose a list of equipment necessary for a day trip in the dory we will be building next. I would then like you all to sketch how you could best stow this equipment aboard the vessel. 

Remembering that all the equipment must be fit for purpose. 

We will be setting off to sea to go fishing for the day in the upper harbour so we will need to know many of the Buoys and Beacons, also we probably will be encountering other vessels while at sea and it is our responsibility to know the Rules of the road at sea.

I will be looking forward to you all explaining to me in depth and detail some of the new things that you have learnt.

Setting up Groups

How is it?

Having come over from VOX, I find some of the functions of Typepad, or should I say lack of, quite hard to get used to.

One of which is of course the lack of being able to set up groups.

Have tried to and have read all the help but.... So I had a go at asking the TypePad community if they can help?

So I'm waiting in great expection at the moment that someone somewere will be able to solve the problem of groups in TypePad.

National assessment tool

How is it?

Unitec systems

Access  some glitches  need to finish to get the report....  wireless network is a problem.. this needs to be bulletproof... students not enrolled in peoplehard.... peoplehard needs to be able to do this automatically... takes time to manually input....id is slow at coming .... temp logons and then adjusted at a later date... We should be diagnotic test students???? 

Reading... skill of typing using technology to support....e learning.... real e learning...skills underlying all text from one type to another....written and visual... 

Writing what is the statagy for this... blog.. the nature of this ... analysis of this...  contextualised online.... Spiky profile

Numeracy calculator or not. in context??? key skills are contextulised .. specific needs...put in 0 if U dont know. 

Result - analysis - demands... teacher gets the report.... needs to inform practice.... All needs to be decoded....

Conversations

 

The layout of this room with the workstations is poorly designed for conversation to happen... So what might the ideal lab look like? Good question Ill have to keep thinking about that!

What does a link look like?  Link Link looks better in this blog as it takes up lets screen space. So I'll trial doing this for a while.

I see that some conversations are fleeting moments and powerfull and some take time and can also be powerfull. a problem for me at the moment is how do I record these in the moment...?

Assessment... What's more important the event/or the learning pior /during and post the event?

Assessment viewed through my eyes has a different focus than if viewed through the students eyes.. So how can we bring these two diffences
